Robyn McCallum
Robyn McCallum
Sculptor, Painter, and Special Effects Makeup Artist
Artist Bio
Robyn McCallum is an artist that works primarily in acrylic paint and sculpture. Most of the work combines liquid latex and other special effects makeup material with more traditional materials. McCallum is currently working towards a Bachelors of Fine Art at McMaster University. Afterwards she plans to work towards becoming a practicing special effects makeup artist. During McCallum’s time at McMaster University she has explored the constant play of traditional and untraditional art practices which is important to her practice.
She was born and raised in Ancaster, Ontario in a household where her mother worked and her dad stayed at home. This dynamic greatly influenced how she viewed media and outlooks on it. As the youngest of four children, she tended to watch movies that were above the level of appropriateness for her young mind. Action movies and sci-fi became a big part of what she viewed as well as movies that included a strong female role and special effects makeup. This led McCallum to finding her passion for special effects makeup. She often views behind the scenes clips from her favourite horror movies and researches the ins and outs of effects makeup. Her favourite artists are not traditional but instead are artists like Tom Savini, Gregory Nicotero, Dick Smith and Jack Pierce. The interest and passion she experiences with special effects makeup relates much to the feeling of exploration of the world and nature as a child, and that same willingness to learn and wonder.
Robyn McCallum is currently a part of a group show at McMaster University in the President’s corridor with a sculptural piece titled Toby. This work includes a sculptural character that invokes an element of storytelling. She has a fascination with a child’s mind and is driven by the world around her, through media, her environment and her life experiences.
